About The Album

A nod to the band’s hometown of San Antonio, TX, The Juantanamos debut album shows off the band’s wide range of musical influences while still managing to maintain a cohesive sound. The songs examine the human condition from many different perspectives; exposing the “Ghost Tracks” that life’s tragedies and triumphs leave behind on our psyches.

Lyrics

1. Sugar Baby
Well, I’ve been thinking a lot, pulling the hair I got
Trying to get through to you.
Do you have some time to lend me a dime
So I can forget about you?

As I’m sitting alone staring at the phone
I just want to stone you.
I’ve got your number. Do you remember
That I’m through with you?

Sugar Baby

Hell on wheels. A heart that steals.
Where are you today?
Deaf and dumb and if I come
Will you have something to say?
Sugar Baby

Start gliding off your throne.
Slipping you a bone.
I might even touch you.
Will you leave me alone?

Looking back towards me
Staring at the face
At the face you see.
The one that’s through. Through with you.

Oh, Sugar Baby

Hell on wheels. A heart that steals.
Where are you today?
Deaf and dumb and if I come
Will you have something to say?
Sugar Baby

Yeah, I’ve been thinking a lot, pulling the hair I got
Trying to get through to you.
Do you have some time to lend me a dime
So I can forget about you?

As I’m sitting alone staring at the phone
I just want to stone you.
Cuckoo’s nest. Give it a rest.
Blood soaked insanity.

Oh, Sugar Baby

Hell on wheels. A heart that steals.
Where are you today?
Deaf and dumb and if I come
Will you have something to say?
Sugar Baby

2. Set Me Free
Thinking of a shot to set me free.
When I caught a glimpse of him smiling back at me.
The report I felt was nowhere I could be.

Could he cure my heart of frozen fear?
Can I whisper longing in his ear?
If only I could be that near.

Free. He set me free.

Been rowing on an island made of ice.
Looking for a shoreline to entice.
I see safe harbor in his eyes.

Free. He set me free.

So I feel the break of day.
And I think he’s showing me the way.
The mourning light of come what may.

Free. He set me free.

3. Galloping Ghost
High afar on a rust colored ridge
Stares a transparent rider who’s fixed upon my gaze.
He whistles past his saddle cutting through the morning haze.
I can hear his dirge repeating, counting out my days.

Oh, I think that I can see.
The features of an empty man straining to be free.
“Please come to me.”
His call. So enticing.

I saw his specter rising when I crossed into my teens.
On his back a star-bound satchel laden with my dreams.

Oh, I think I can hear.
The pleadings of a hollow man cries a silent tear.
“Please come be near.”
His voice. Without fear.

Crossing deeper water, treading through the sinking light
Brings a galloping reminder of wrong turns taken right.

Oh, his scent fills the air.
His ashes rise and burn for me to climb the final stair.
“Please come be me.”
He waves. Come and see.

4. Mataguey
Wake up in a room that I don’t know.
The faces glow in a clock that lights our plight below.
This early hour’s when I fear most, things I’ve lost.
Will I ever see my golden coast?

I’ve paced the trails that have no end.
Can’t seem to bend to another way.
The only road I see that lies before me is my own destiny.
In a desert far away named Mataguey,
I’ll dig my grave and hope to save a shadow of myself.
My soul that’s been sun-dried upon this shelf.

Lay down in a place where I can hide.
The sky is wide and the stars bring forth the rising tide.
This darkened hour’s when I feel numb.
Am I the sum of my hopes and dreams that have not come?

I’ve paced the trails that have no end.
Can’t seem to bend to another way.
The only road I see that lies before me is my own destiny.
In a desert far away named Mataguey,
I’ll dig my grave and hope to save a shadow of myself.
My soul that’s been sun-dried upon this shelf.

5. Forgiveness
“Sorry” is not the word I think I’ve barely heard
You’re always saying that you’re just misunderstood.
What a heavy price to pay. Make it through another day
Just to feel like what we do is petty play.

What does it mean when you say you apologize?
Are you begging for time just to harmonize?
Have you fallen from grace and repeat repent?
Or is your stepping from sin truly heaven sent?

Will you betray my trust and believe it’s all been just
A river flowing through your veins of crust?
What have we more to do to bring a day that’s true
Just to feel like I have a friend in you?

What does it mean when you say you apologize?
Are you begging for time just to harmonize?
Have you fallen from grace and repeat repent?
Or is your stepping from sin truly heaven sent?

6. Casting Plaster Shadows
Practice your version of the truth. You stay away.
Your words don’t bring me any comfort, bathe, or soothe
For you, it’s through and through.

Switch sides will bring you happiness?
I could abide. Change for you.
Fill up your hallowed emptiness until
I’m scraped aside.

Don’t you have gratitude? Don’t you have any reason?
Give me some amplitude to play for your new season.
You’re casting someone new. A plaster shadow of me.
You haven’t changed the view. Still trying to rearrange me.

Dousing the flames that burn within me.
Drown my stake.
You build me a vocabulary pyre that torched my soul apart.
Heart break.

Don’t you have gratitude? Don’t you have any reason?
Give me some amplitude to play for your new season.
You’re casting someone new. A plaster shadow of me.
You haven’t changed the view. Still trying to rearrange me.

You say you want to stay as friends.
I will decide a new way.
Pretend I have open heart for you.
Peel away inside.

Don’t you have gratitude? Don’t you have any reason?
Give me some amplitude to play for your new season.
You’re casting someone new. A plaster shadow of me.
You haven’t changed the view. Still trying to rearrange me.

7. Spoiled By War
Why? Leave me alone.
You’re skinning to the bone.

I don’t want to hear about it.
Gutter ball and bully pulpit.
Tripping through the fight fantastic.
Swallow pill of bitter magic.
See? Free!

Why are you so damn passive
When my touch is so corrosive?
Don’t you see?
It really isn’t me.

Trim and sail afar.
For you are spoiled by war.

Don’t you want to fight about it?
Thread your noose flaming comet.
Battle born to bask in glory.
Don’t have time to hear you story.
Star of war.

Why are you so resistant
When my kiss is just persistent?
Don’t you see?
It really isn’t me.

Taste my cup of pain.
You’re breathing toxic stain.

I’ve grown tired and I’ve grown weary.
Propping you from sedentary.
I can’t make you any stronger.
If I tried with logic sounder.
Might! Makes right!

Why are you so damn passive
When my touch is so corrosive?
Don’t you see?
It really isn’t me.

Maybe in another lifetime
We’d enjoy a better pastime
Don’t you see?
It really isn’t me.

8. Not Enough
Billy started well enough in a town
That was no diamond in the rough.
Baseball stars and roadside bars.
Packing slackers in rusted junker cars.

His parents cried out for the fame
By having Billy run the bases of their game.
Stellar grades right from the start
Never seemed to satisfy their heart.

Always swung for the farthest fence
Though his stance had no defense.
All he wanted was to win their love
Though not…not enough.

Billy changed his name to Bill.
It seemed to suit him since he always seemed past due.
Tried to find a way to prove
A better future without so much to lose.

Soon his life went astray
When his parents kept begging him to play
Keeping score within the rain
Was the only way to stem the pain

Catching strikes from a battered glove.
All he wanted was to win their love
Though not…not enough.

No one ever asked what I wanted from life
Now these walls closing in only echo my strife.
Misunderstood. Just a number, no name.
Last to take the crown and the first to take the blame.

Life has no horizon to fill up my sky.
All that I can see is an empty goodbye.
Is this the end’s big inning of all that I’ve made?
Were all the games I’ve played worth the pain that I’ve paid?

Billy was a major player but he never got it right.
Not the Bill he hoped to be so early in his life.
And now he fades away from the light of day
As his dreams become a darker shade of gray.

I said that
Billy was a major player but he never got it right.
Not the Bill he hoped to be so early in his life.
And now he fades away from the light of day
As his dreams become a darker shade of gray.

9. Billionaire Blues
South Bay is where people say
A corner place to hide your cares away.
Downtown is where people go
When they figure out that they don’t know.

Reaching back for the good times he had.
Memories flashing, none of them bad.
A skinny kid with the whole world ahead.
Smoking dreams from the foot of his bed.

Billionaire boss man’s got the blues.
Can’t score with so much to lose.

Fast cars, yacht clubs, and a spanked out G6,
Are no solutions to get that quick fix.
Taking hits now just to get by,
But money won’t buy you the American pie.

Things have changed from the dime bags he bought.
All it takes now is one from the billions he’s got.
Briefcase flooded with dozens of deals
With no connections to the heart of his wheels.

Cruising round in a millionaire’s sled,
Looking like a target that needs to be bled.
Driving past all the chances to buy
The golden road to the ultimate high.

Billionaire boss man’s got the blues.
Can’t score with so much to lose.
A Lamborghini with nowhere to run.
Taking turns in the house of fun.

Fast cars, yacht clubs, and a spanked out G6,
Are no solutions to get that quick fix.
Taking hits now just to get by,
But money won’t buy you the American pie.

Finally flying in a jet with no wings.
Sunset eyes and the fear that it brings.
There’s no stick shift to the magic of life.
No reversing from the moments that lie.

10. Until The End
I know what you want. I know what you need.
So deep inside I plant the seed.
Down on your knees this aching greed.
You’ll beg for more and I aim to please.

Just one more time.
Intoxicated with your lies.
I am blind.
To every truth that burns my eyes.

Pleasure or pain. Too numb to tell.
Such a thin line between heaven and hell.
So hold me close until the end.

You’ve never known a love like this.
I’ll take you to orgasmic bliss.
I’ll raise you up. I’ll tear you down.
Make you my bitch. You’re gagged and bound.

Just one more time.
Intoxication so divine.
Utopian lie.
Can’t seem to ever sever the ties.

Pleasure or pain. Too numb to tell.
Such a thin line between heaven and hell.
So hold me close until the end.

I don’t believe you’ll ever leave,
Now that I’m your symbiotic disease.
I’ll take it all and ask for more.
To pay the wage of this internal war.

Just one more time.
Self destruction tastes so fine.
You can try to deny.
But none of us will ever survive.

Pleasure or pain. Too numb to tell.
Such a thin line between heaven and hell.
So hold me close until the end.
